2. CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING ACTIVITY: ENHANCING COMPREHENSION IN THE INTERPRETIVE MODE.
Describe an activity that you might do in the future that would require your students to function in the interpretive mode. (For example, you might have your students look through the classified ads of an authentic newspaper.)
Select one of the variables involved in comprehension and interpretation (pp. 162-170).
Describe what you could do to help your students overcome this problematic variable and enhance their comprehension.
ASSIGNMENTS DUE THIS WEEK:
1. Checking for Understanding Activity: Enhancing Comprehension in the Interpretive Mode
2. Professional Development Plan Rubric and Professional Development Plan. Both of these items are to be submitted together. This assignment is to be completed INDIVIDUALLY.
a. Microteach Professional Development Plan Rubric:
Once you open up this plan, it is expected that you will type your responses directly into the template. The boxes WILL expand as you reflect upon your responses. Please refer to the directions and sample below for guidance. You are expected to write your responses in DETAIL.
Directions for completing your Microteach II Professional Development Plan:
You are still in the learning stages of teaching. This assignment will enable you to pinpoint areas that you still need to work on and will give you a plan for improvement that you can implement AFTER you are finished with our class.
Provided below is a sample of part of a professional development plan. Since the sample below deals with the "Closure/Summary of the Lesson," do NOT select that criterion as one of the criteria upon which you need to improve.
Under Column 1, identify the problematic criteria and provide evidence verifying that this criterion was problematic. Refer to what you noticed in your recording and your peers' comments on the feedback sheets. Include your peers' comments in this column.
Under Column 2, you are to indicate things (activities) you can do to improve your performance in the problematic areas. The activities should be tangible, specific, and observable. You can say that you will jot down notes in your future lesson plans to remember to do something, prepare "specific academic praise" cheat sheets, use a seating chart to check off the names of students on whom you will call to answer questions, etc.
Under Column 3, you are to identify FUTURE experiences/situations (after this semester is over) in which you can implement these activities/strategies. You can cite internships, future field experiences, tutoring or coaching situations, situations in which you are in a leadership/instructional position (student organization, for example), your employment, and other such situations in which you can legitimately practice the skills in which you need improvement.
Remember to refer to the grading key on the rubric. You will earn only one point for a cursory response, listing without explanation, or a single sentence response. A detailed response with explanation and justification provided will earn you 2 points. RESPOND IN DETAIL. You are expected to provide thoughtful, reflective responses.

1. READ: Teacher's Handbook: Chapter 6 (pp. 162-170).
