*ANNOUNCEMENT ONE*:

I hope all of you have been enjoying this beautiful week. Unfortunately, I woke up sick this morning and won't be able to conduct our class today. I have added below notes and activities that I had planned for class today. (Go to *TODAY'S NOTES AND ACTIVITIES*
below.) You will be expected to read the notes and do whatever activities are provided. That way, we won't get behind on our class's agenda.

Please send me your Checking for Understanding activity - make sure your name is included on your typed assignment - as an email attachment to ProfessorVerkler@aol.com TODAY.

Although I will post this message on our course wiki and Web courses, please contact any classmates whose email addresses/cell numbers, etc. you know and let them know that our class will not meet today and that they need to go to our course wiki for directions. Thank you so much for this assistance.

I apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to seeing you next week.

Dr. Verkler

Announcement Two: In this course, you are given the opportunity to attend professional development opportunities and reflect on them in lieu of completing the final class project. An upcoming event is the KnightED Talks Student Showcase (an in-house professional development conference) on Saturday, January 28, 2017. If you wish to attend the KnightED Talks Student Showcase, register online by Friday, January 20, 2017 at http://education.ucf.edu/knightedtalks. Online registration, which qualifies you for door prizes, is $15. On-site registration (the day of the Showcase) will be $20.

TO PREPARE FOR OUR CLASS THIS WEEK, DO THE FOLLOWING:

1. READ:
  • Teacher's Handbook: Preliminary Chapter: Becoming Familiar with the Profession and Expectations for Language Teachers
  • Teacher's Handbook: Chapter 2

2. CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING ACTIVITY: Standards for Foreign Language Learning.
  • Indicate an overall theme/topic of a chapter/unit that you would like to teach your future students.
  • For each of the five C's (don't include the subcategories under each of them), type in narrative form one activity that you could have your future students do that would address the theme/topic and your Standard (C). You should ultimately have a total of five activities (one/each C) for your chapter/unit.
  • You will be expected to share your activities in class and to turn in this assignment for my evaluation.
  • Click on the file below for an example of what I am looking for:
